Fat Love, not just in the US

First off, I would like to apologize to the people in Australia.  I jumped the gun a bit with the story I posted last week about weighing fat passengers. This was apparently bought on by one anti-fat jerk and most Australians aren’t going for it.  I know that are many size positive people down under and I think they do a great job.  I think my frustration came from the many stories I was hearing from overseas.

Fat Hatred, not just in the US.

So it looks like New Zealand wants to join Australia for fat hatred. Without any proof at all that her health will be a burden on the system, a British fat woman has been denied entry to New Zealand because she was fat.

I hope they don't like fat tourist dollars either.

Australians would like a fat tax on fat people on airplanes. That area of the world just doesn't seem want our tourist dollars.

Guess what!

A third study says that if you are clinically overweight (BMI of 25 - 29.5) you are actually healthier than those who are clinically normal weight.  This is according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. 

Of course after the study was published,  Many could not accept that they were actually wrong: that the obesity epidemic has been overblown and it is not as dangerous to be fat.

Except that there was a study done in 1984 that said basically the same thing.  The lowest risk was overweight, the highest were morbid obesity and underweight.  Normal and obese were in the middle and although obese was slightly higher than normal weight, the difference was negligible.

Why won't people accept the fact that chubby is normal? (Although I believe whatever weight your body settles on is your normal weight.)  Well there is A LOT of money to be made by promoting dieting and the target audience always seems to be the women who just need to lose a few pounds.   I am a perfect example.  I was targeted to lose weight in my teens and at the time I was in the overweight range (after 17 years of dieting I am now in the "obese" range, yea me.)  Most of the women at Weight Watcher group I attended were in the overweight range. 

Drug Companies, Surgeons, the diet industry, even researchers don't care about you, they only care about money.

Before my rant I want to focus on a positive story.  Connie Sobczak of Body Positive is up for Volvo for Life awards.  The prize is $25,000 that would all go to Body Positive.  It's easy to vote. Just go to the site, click on "Quality" then submit your vote for Connie.

Now on to the rant.

Ugh.

I am sick and tired of being blamed for overconsumption. I don't drive when I can walk and/or take public transportation. I buy used when I can, I reduse, reuse, freecycle and recycle, buy organic & local when I can & according to the carbon calculator  my personal impact is smaller than average.

Yet, myself and other fatties are constantly being blamed for overconsumption.

Case in point a movie from Pixar called "WALL-E" where the Earth has been abandoned due to too much garbage and WALL-E is the only robot left still doing his task and cleaning the Earth. Sounds like a great message right?  Well it seems that the humans are now big fat blobs who live in lounge chairs in spaceships (Too fat to get up but still able to build spaceships!)

The link to Obesity and overconsumption is purely hypothetical.  I mean have there been studies to prove that more fat people buy gas guzzlers? Create more garbage? Don't use solar power?
