I bring bad news

I hate to be the bearer of so much bad news.  As always I like to post fat positive stories. 

So one positive note; Hairspray has now made about 60 million.

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine as for all intents and purposes stated that Obesity is a social disease.  That if you are fat, you have a 57% chance of infected your friend with fat. I’ve read through the study and found it to be very circumstantial. Sandy Szwarc takes it apart fairly well in her blog   .  I agree with her that it should be dismiss as junk science but we need to take on the selected reporting we see in the media.  Notice how the press never really went crazy when CDC admitted the 400,000 deaths from obesity was pure fiction.

I am happy to say if I influence my friends that they be whatever size they are meant to be, I’m glad to do it.

Mike Huckabee blames fatties for health care crisis in his war or words with Michael Moore. 

This start with what’s wrong with what Gov. Huckabee has said.  First off his evidence is anecdotal.  If we are using anecdotal evidence I can say that because I stopped dieting I see the doctor less I know go to the doctor 2-3 times a year as opposed to once a month while I was dieting.   Also if you are diabetic and you start taking care of yourself and doing what you can to control your diabetes you will go to the doctor less regardless of if you lose weight or not.

Our healthcare system is mess b/c we allow pharmaceutical and health insurance companies to dictated health care and we blame fatties for the problems.  In the 80’s we had the same problem and we blamed people with HIV/AIDS.

I have received word that NAAFA received a call from a widowed mother that her child had been taken by the authorities (without notice) because the child was fat. The child has since been returned because authorities acted improperly due to not giving notice.  This doesn’t mean the child is safe with her parent.

This one made me want to hit my head against a wall.
Workers are told to shape up or pay up 

Let’s see, Obesity is supposedly the deadly plague to humankind so let’s make it hard for fat people to get healthcare.

How about this?  Instead of focusing on how much a worker weighs, how about we do things like have job security, adequate vacation, maternity, sick leave, pension plans, 401ks, day care, health plans including full vision and dental, flexible times, programs to reduce burn out and competitive salaries.  I bet you that any job that has this will have happy healthy workers regardless of what they weigh.

All these stories just mean one thing.  We are a threat. We aren’t just taking it.  We are refusing to diet and  forcing ourselves to be a size we aren’t.  We still need to fight until discrimination like this becomes unacceptable.

Hairspray the movie based on a musical based on a movie made $27,476,745 at the box office this weekend.  While that is a good haul, we need to send this movie to #1 next week.   Let Hollywood know that a fat chick can be a draw and make a breakout star of the fabulous Nikki Blonsky.

Fat Kids and Vermont

Still sick from Bronchitis

Fat kid's lives are about as good as kids with cancer.  Well considering the current war on fat kids I'm not surprised.  That's right shame still doesn't work.  There is always talk that "obesity related illnesses" are actually caused by stress being fat in a thin world.   I'm glad this article brings it up.

I was teased relentlessly in school for being fat; I was hoping with more children being fat that the stigma would fade but apparently not.

Some good news, I went to Vermont last weekend (Convalesced with my DH who is was sick) and found the Vermont T-Shirt company that goes from infant to 6x.  And even though I wasn't happy that they charged about $2 more for anything over 2x, they actually had real sizing.   I used to wear an XL t-shirt but found XL had gotten smaller so I have to wear 2x now.   Not at this place , the XL was big enough. 

NAAFA Con

I’m getting over icky bronchitis (Thankfully the doctor did not blame it on being fat), so this will be a short post.

If you are in the Chicago Area get thee to the NAAFA/ASDAH conference .  I will not be attending this year although I really wish I was.  Especially since this will be a combo con with Association for Size Diversity and Health and the theme will be one of my favorites Health at Every Size.  I’ve been to three NAAFA cons and they are all a blast!

I think combining cons was a great idea.  It allows the NAAFA con to have more of an activist/academic/medical stance.  But don't worry, there will still be chances to relax with dances and pool parties. 

Seeing the schedule, I envy anyone who is going.  So if you are in the area, you should check it out. It's pretty cheap.  You can get a pass for the entire con for $395 or a weekend pass for $210.  Day passes are also available.

Also there be two autographed copies of my books at the auction filled with hugs and kisses.

Blah Clothing Stores

Expanding Plus-Size and Big-and-Tall Clothing Market Estimated to Reach $107 Billion by 2012.   

Guess who shouldn’t be getting any of that pie: Old Navy who feels that fat women (unless they’re pregnant) need not come into their stores. I know a lot of people will tell me that it’s just a store that there are more important issues out there, but I don’t want to be forced to the back of the bus just to buy clothing. I went to the mall on Saturday and I passed dozens of stores that don’t carry my size.  I’m tired of it.  I’m not sure who I dislike more stores that don’t carry my size at all or stores like Old Navy who only give us lip service.

Thankfully the Fat Girl’s Flea Market is on Sept 29th (Only one day this year).  If you live in the NYC metro area you must come!  (If you don’t, beg, borrow and steal to get there). This is a wonderful event that is not only size positive but it is a great place to find fabulous clothes.  Practically my entire wardrobe is made up from items I found at the flea.  I’ve even found items with the tags still on them including a Torrid skirt and a suede jacket.

I only wish it would happen every week or that clothing stores would learn how to treat a fat chick.
