There is a debate on whether to incorporate movement as part of the size acceptance movement. Some think that incorporating good health and fitness leads to healthism that fat people can only exist if they eat right and exercise or you aren't into size acceptance if you are into fitness. I understand their point. If you are fat you deserve all the same rights as everyone else no matter what your eating or exercise habits are.
However I believe everyone has the right to exercise: fat, thin, uncoordinated, hard-body. The right to feel the good endorphins that exercise brings. I believe that fat people have the right to exercise (or not to exercise) without ridicule. I think that a lot of fat people don’t get their exercise due to being ostracized. I got called a “fat bitch” while riding my bike and I sometimes get looks from the slimmer swimmers.
However exercise can be fun and it is very fun when you don’t do it for weight loss. The important thing is to find something you are comfortable with. I love to swim, bike and walk. I hate to climb stairs, so I don’t.
Here is a lovely essay by Charlotte Cooper about getting on a bike.
