The Food Police

Employees told: Lose weight, cash in

While I am not against offering healthy food and gyms at work or even at school, I found it downright dangerous to push people to lose weight.  People may try dangerous dieting to get these incentives.   Another article mentions a challenge to lose 25 lbs by January. 

Soon the food police will come to your home and make sure you are counting calories.

Meanwhile, the figure of 26,000 dying a year from obesity (compared to 400,000 originally lied about) still stands.

Censorship

A very size friendly book "The Earth my Butt and other round things" by Carolyn Mackler was removed from Winters Mill High School in Westminster, Maryland by Superintendent Charles I Ecker for sexuality and language.

Oddly, I don't remember much sexuality or language in the book.  I do remember it being wonderfully size positive.  In the story, an outcast fat teen Gin finds self acceptance  without losing weight.

But there is a bright side:  Students have started a petition to get the book back on the shelves making the superintendent reconsider his decision.

Doctors and Family Guy

This is a difficult post to write.  But I wanted to share the fact that even size acceptance activists has their bad days.

I went to my doctor today for my regular checkup.  I have become considerably more healthy since I gave up dieting with the only health problem (which started when I began low carb dieting) was  elevated cholesterol.   While my doctor isn't that size accepting, in the past she's been pretty low key of my weight.  Her belief had been it is okay to be heavy but not too heavy.

So here I bring good news, I am now off one of my meds, trying to get off a second one, I'm feeling a lot better than I have before.  All since I stopped dieting.  My only problem was getting rid of that bad cholesterol which I have been working on by eating more vegetables and working to get fit.

So Doctor suddenly harps on my weight.  I tell her that I've been fat all my life and maybe that's what I am supposed to be.  That I had been dieting for 17 years and all I've gained was 70 pounds.  Then she had the nerve to tell me to consider Gastric Lapband surgery. I turned around and literary told her "What? Are you kidding?"  I told her how dangerous the surgery was, she argued back that I would be having health problems in the future due to my weight.

Now it gets the part I'm ashamed of, where I was a bad fat activist.  I should have left, gotten dressed and walked out.

But I didn't.  I couldn't believe that my doctor would recommend surgery WHEN THEY WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH ME!

Even worse, I thought about losing a few pounds after I left her office.  Don't worry, I'm back on track.  It's more important to get healthy then to lose weight.

Needless to say I'm on the hunt for a new doctor.

In other news: Family Guy made fun of NAAFA and the NAACP.  Family Guy, a guilty pleasure of mine, where fat jokes don't bother me because they make fun of everyone mocked NAAFA and NAACP.  After Peter realizes he's fat he starts an organization "NAAFP"  the "National Association for the Advancement of Fat People."  There were many fat jokes, but it's nice to be noticed. :-)

X-mas!

So Saturday I went X-mas shopping at the Queens Center Mall.  One of the stops (not one of mine) was Yellow Rat Bastard (A NYC store that's expanding). YRB sells gothy and punk clothes but not if you are big unless you're a guy.  In YRB the women's sizes go up to L.  And the men's?  Well you can get up to  2xl.

I was with my niece and I explained to her why I wouldn't buy anything in YRB because they don't carry my size.   (They do carry very cool accessories). I am sending them an e-mail when I finish this post.  [email protected] 

Oddly enough I got a tinkerbell shirt in my size at the Disney Store.

Ended my shopping trip at Hot Topic which does carry some plus size clothes.  However they are expensive.  I wish a Torrid would open nearby.  I love their sales rack.   

I'm a 2x so I am usually in the token plus sizes in regular retail if they have it.    I wish they had bigger sizes.  People who are 3x are higher might want to look cool also.
