Marsha Ava Menard passed away on March 6, 2006. For those who do not know who she is, she had planned Fat Girl Walking, a trek from San Francisco to New York. I had the pleasure of meeting her at the 2005 NAAFA convention. She was a girl of strong spirit that I know will be missed.
I am hoping that her friends and family will continue her dream by doing the walk and show that us fat chicks are strong and able.
I notice with shows like the Biggest Loser, an recent episode Primetime live who used humiliation with make people "slim" down that we seem to be returned to the idea that shame will make a fat people thin. The shame diet doesn't work either unless you want to have eating disorders, body image problems and low self-esteem. A perfect example of this is in the book "Diary of a Fat Housewife" by Rosemary Green. When she was losing weight, she loved herself when she was gaining weight she hated herself.
Alternet, one of my favorite lefty news sources put out a wonderful article called One Big Fat Lie. The article essentially points out our dangerous obsession with dieting, while pointing that fat doesn't always mean unhealthy and that focusing on eating right and exercising is more important than the numbers on the scale. It is a nice and size friendly article.
The biggest problem with it comes after, the comments are unsupportive and downright mean. I found it sad that the side that claims to be concerned so much for the welfare of people, are unsympathetic to fat people.
Fat people live with prejudice every day. We get poorer health care because either we can't get health coverage or our doctor blames everything on being fat. We are targeted by drug companies and are experimented on with new diet pills and dangerous surgeries. We are considered lesser beings, out of control, lazy, poor character, with no self control and diseased.
Except in 3 cities and one state, we can be fired for being fat. We have to pay extra for ugly clothing and most stores don't even carry our size. We represent 50% of our population yet receive only 3% representation in TV and movies. That 3% is often neurotic, out of control eater and is almost never the lead. We try to exercise but are made fun of.
We are always told we could be thin if we wanted too.
We can't. We are fat and that is who we are just like some people are thin, gay, black, old, young. We cannot change who we are.
At this point the two countries that push diets the most seem to be the US and Australia. However this week Australia does the right thing by not allowing Peter Foster to be involved in the promotion of diets after being convicted of fraud. Foster's had also been involved in diet scam frauds in Britain. There is no magic pill. Diets don't work. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
I recently joined the Y. I love to swim, so I was anxious to get to a pool. While there on a Sunday I noticed that it was moderately crowded. I know that most gyms are the least populated around the holidays. People who have being dieting usually complete give up by Thanksgiving. One of the reasons that dieting is poor to your health. It encourages an all or nothing approach to eating and exercise. When there is no weight loss, the desire to practice healthy eating habits and exercise is less. Using myself as an example, I found that once I stopped dieting, I began exercising more or less regularly. I never gave up.
I think this is something to think about for kids. Instead of giving them a weight loss goal, give them a fitness goal. And make Fitness fun. I hated gym because I was often the target of dodge balls. Had there been DDR in my gym class I might has not tried to get out of it that much.
I got my first royalty check… muhuhahaha. As the e-mail I mentioned on Jan 16, 2006 blog entry, I did
laugh all the way to bank. I will spend
the money all on me. I’m going to
Bermuda, see ya! Hahaha… I took
advantage of fat chicks by saying we are beautiful, that we should love
ourselves and to say no to the dieting scam.
Actually my husband put the check in the bank, once it
clears I will be donating a portion to it to NY-NAAFA and what’s left maybe
could get me a value seat on a jetscrash airlines.
